Will that little girl ever be able to walk on her own two feet again?
INT. VALE DRIVEWAY - CONTINUOUS
Emma looks down at David’s large, reassuring hands. The water drips steadily from her soaked curls onto his dark coat, but David’s gaze remains entirely unwavering.
EMMA (Whispering, voice trembling) Will it... will it hurt?
DAVID If it hurts even a little, we stop immediately. I promise you.
Sandra lunges forward, her quiet indifference completely shattering into manic desperation. She reaches for the handles of Emma's wheelchair.
SANDRA This is medical negligence! Step away from my niece before I call the police!
David rises in one swift motion, putting his towering frame directly between Sandra and the child. He pulls a sleek leather badge holder from his inner shirt pocket, flashing a gold shield alongside a federal identification card.
DAVID (Voice dropping an octave, deadly calm) David Carter. Lead Prosecutor, Federal Crimes Division. Call them, Sandra. Please. Let’s get a forensic unit out here right now.
Sandra freezes, her breath hitching in her throat. Her eyes dart to the black SUV idling at the curb.
EMMA (From behind David) Mr. David...?
David turns back, his sharp demeanor softening instantly as he kneels once more. He places his hands open, palms up, just beneath Emma's arms without touching her.
DAVID Only when you’re ready, Emma.
Emma takes a deep, shuddering breath. She grips David’s forearms. Slowly, agonizingly, her small white sneakers push flat against the wet concrete.
Her knees wobble.
Her legs shake beneath the weight.
Then, for the first time in three years, Emma Vale stands on her own two feet.
A choked sob escapes Emma’s lips as she stares down at the pavement beneath her.
EMMA I’m... I’m standing.
DAVID (Tears shining in his eyes) You’re standing, Emma. You were never broken.
Sandra staggers backward, reaching into her cardigan pocket for a small amber medicine bottle.
DAVID (CONT'D) (Without looking away from Emma) Don't bother hiding the paralytic, Sandra. Dr. Vance’s office was raided twenty minutes ago.
Sandra stops dead in her tracks.
DAVID (CONT'D) We’ve been tracking the Vale estate trust for six months. Your sister left Emma forty million dollars. The only way you could keep control of that money was if Emma remained permanently incapacitated under your court-appointed care. Vance was prescribing a synthetic nerve-blocking agent disguised as 'vitamins.'
SANDRA (Voice cracking, backing toward the house) You... you have no proof...
DAVID Vance sang like a bird the second the FBI breached his clinic. The black SUV behind me isn't my car.
On cue, two unmarked federal sedans tear around the corner, red and blue lights flashing silently beneath their grills. They block the driveway completely. Four armed federal agents step out, moving swiftly up the walk.
AGENT BAKER Sandra Vale! Keep your hands where we can see them!
Sandra drops the pill bottle, her knees buckling as the agents secure her in handcuffs and lead her away. She doesn't utter another word.
David gently scoops Emma into his arms, wrapping his dry suit jacket tighter around her shivering frame. She buries her face in the crook of his neck, clinging to him like a lifeline.
EMMA (Muffled) Where am I going now?
DAVID Somewhere safe, Emma. Somewhere with sunshine, where nobody will ever hold you back again.
He carries her toward the SUV, opening the passenger door and placing her safely inside. As he buckles her seatbelt, Emma reaches out, her small fingers touching his sleeve.
EMMA Can I... can I learn to run?
David smiles, a warm, bright expression that lights up his tired face.
DAVID Emma, you're going to fly.
He closes the door, stepping around to the driver's side as the afternoon sun finally breaks through the clouds, washing over the driveway and wiping away the cold shadows for good.
FADE OUT.
