What is the secret that is about to be revealed?

Heavy rain lashes against the high windows of the quiet hospital floor.

DOROTHY GRANT (71) sits in a wheelchair outside her room, clutching a worn leather handbag. CALLIE and BEATRICE (6) huddle beside her, their navy backpack resting on Dorothy’s lap.

MARCUS (40s), a weary social worker from Child Protective Services, stands opposite them with a clip board.

MARCUS Mrs. Grant, the facility transfer bus is downstairs. I’m sorry, but without the private insurance clearance, we have to proceed. Until your recovery is complete, the girls will be placed in temporary emergency foster care.

DOROTHY (voice breaking) Please. Just give me forty-eight hours. Don't separate them. They only have each other!

MARCUS It’s out of my hands. I’m sorry.

A heavy set of double doors at the end of the hall SWINGS OPEN violently.

CLAIRE (30s) strides down the hallway in a sharp business suit, followed closely by TWO MEN IN DARK SUITS and a team of hospital ADMINISTRATORS trying to keep pace.

BEATRICE (gasps, pointing) Callie, look!

Behind them, walking slowly with a cane but with total authority, is JAMES ASHBY (45). His face is pale, but his eyes are razor-sharp.

ADMINISTRATOR Mr. Ashby, please, you were discharged from the Cardiac ICU less than an hour ago, you shouldn't be walking!

JAMES (ignoring him, stopping before Marcus) Step away from those children.

MARCUS Excuse me? Who are you?

CLAIRE (stepping forward, opening a leather dossier) He is James Ashby, Chairman of Ashby Capital Group. And as of ten minutes ago, Mr. Ashby’s foundation has purchased Saint Matthew’s Rehabilitation Center outright.

The Administrator pales. Marcus blinks, speechless.

JAMES (looking down at Marcus) Which means Mrs. Grant's care is fully covered in perpetuity. And her legal defense team—the best family law firm in the state—is currently filing for permanent legal guardianship of her granddaughters.

DOROTHY (confused, tearful) I... I don't understand. Who are you?

Callie steps forward from behind Dorothy's wheelchair. She looks at James, her eyes wide, then looks at his face.

CALLIE You’re James.

JAMES (softens instantly) I am.

James drops slowly to one knee, wincing slightly as he leaning on his cane to meet the twins at eye level.

JAMES (CONT'D) You held my hand when everyone else walked past. You saved my life.

BEATRICE You blinked! We knew you were in there.

JAMES (a faint, genuine smile) I was. And now I’m going to make sure nobody ever separates you two. Ever.

MARCUS (stammering) Mr. Ashby, with all due respect, there are procedures... state regulations regarding missing parents—

JAMES (standing, voice turned to steel) Then you can explain those procedures to my chief legal counsel, who is currently opening a private investigation into the disappearance of Marissa Grant. If someone hurt their mother, I will spend every dollar I own to find them.

James turns back to Dorothy, his expression softening into deep respect.

JAMES (CONT'D) My wife once told me that the test of a person isn't what they do when kindness is easy, but when stopping costs them something. Your granddaughters stopped for a dying stranger. They learned that from you.

Dorothy covers her mouth, tears finally spilling over. She reaches out and takes James’s hand, squeezing it—just as Callie had done in the square.

DOROTHY Thank you... thank you.

CALLIE (looking up at James) Are you going to be okay now, James?

James looks down at the tiny hand resting near his chest, then looks out at the rain-streaked window toward the city skyline that used to be his entire world.

JAMES (softly) For the first time in a very long time... yes. I am.

He reaches down, taking Callie’s hand in his right and Beatrice’s in his left.
