The little girl continued to cry.
Her face was wet with tears, and a red mark could still be seen on her cheek.
The entire ballroom had fallen silent.
Then the bride suddenly stepped forward.
She looked at the child.
Then at the man standing beside her.
Her expression changed completely.
She had finally seen the truth.
The older woman sitting at the table slowly stood up.
Her eyes were fixed on the little girl.
Then she noticed the small scar near the child's cheek.
Her breathing stopped.
She had seen that scar before.
Years ago.
On a photograph that had disappeared from her family's safe.
She turned toward the man.
"Where did you get that child?"
The man said nothing.
The bride looked at him in disbelief.
"You told me she was nobody."
He remained silent.
The older woman stepped closer to the little girl.
The child instinctively moved behind the bride.
The older woman's eyes filled with tears.
Then she noticed something else.
A small silver pendant around the girl's neck.
Her hands began to tremble.
"That pendant..."
The man immediately stepped forward.
"Don't touch her."
The older woman stared at him.
Her voice became cold.
"Take it off."
He refused.
The bride slowly reached toward the pendant.
She turned it over.
On the back was a tiny engraved family crest.
Her eyes widened.
She recognized it.
It belonged to her husband's family.
The older woman covered her mouth.
"No..."
The man looked terrified.
The bride whispered,
"Why does she have your family's crest?"
He had no answer.
Then the older woman saw the little girl's face again.
The resemblance was impossible to ignore.
She looked at the man.
"You've known all along."
He lowered his eyes.
The older woman's voice broke.
"She is the child you told us had died."
The ballroom erupted in whispers.
The bride stepped backward.
Tears filled her eyes.
The man finally looked at the little girl.
For the first time, his arrogance disappeared.
The child looked up at him.
"Why did you lie about me?"
He could not speak.
Then the older woman slowly picked up an old photograph from the table.
It showed a young woman holding the same little girl as a baby.
On the woman's finger was the exact same family ring.
The bride stared at the photograph.
Then she looked at the man.
"Who is that woman?"
The man's face went pale.
Before he could answer, the ballroom doors suddenly opened.
Everyone turned.
A woman stood in the doorway.
The same woman from the photograph.
Alive.
She looked directly at the little girl.
The child stopped crying.
"Mommy?"
