The fate of the traitor here
SCENE START
INT. SECOND FLOOR HALLWAY - CONTINUOUS
Nathaniel stands dead center, his frame rigid. Rain hits the skylight above like a volley of loose gravel.
He pulls a heavy brass key from his inner jacket pocket—the master override key he never leaves home without.
VIVIAN (Voice sharp, losing control) Nathaniel, stop this madness. The girl is hysterical. You’re letting a hired caregiver undermine your own family!
Nathaniel doesn't answer. He strides down the corridor toward Caroline's sealed bedroom.
Mara steps up beside Eleanor and Sophie, drawing both girls behind her.
INT. CAROLINE'S BEDROOM - CONTINUOUS
The lock CLICKS open.
Nathaniel pushes the heavy oak door. The room smells of stale dust and dried lavender. Everything remains frozen in time—the vanity, the silk sheets, the mahogany wardrobe.
Vivian rushes into the doorway behind him, her heels clicking frantically.
VIVIAN There is nothing in here except memories, Nathaniel! Respect my sister's memory!
Nathaniel ignores her, sweeping his gaze across the room. He notices the floorboards near the built-in wardrobe—a faint scrape mark on the polished wood.
He walks over, grabs the hidden panel inside the wardrobe, and yanks it open.
Inside lies a locked metal medical box and a thick stack of prescription bottles.
Nathaniel grabs the top bottle. His face drains of all color.
NATHANIEL (Reading the label, voice trembling) Caroline Calloway. Prescribed... three weeks ago?
He turns around slowly, holding the bottle under the amber chandelier light.
NATHANIEL (CONT'D) My wife died eleven months ago, Vivian. So why was her prescription for heart medication refilled at a pharmacy downtown... twenty-one days ago?
Vivian freezes in the doorway. The color leaves her face entirely.
VIVIAN (Stammering) That... that’s a clerical error. The pharmacy—
NATHANIEL (Roaring) DON'T LIE TO ME!
Nathaniel steps forward, slamming the prescription bottle onto the vanity table, shattering a crystal perfume bottle.
NATHANIEL (CONT'D) Sophie said you gave her 'Mommy's medicine.' This isn't a sleep tonic. This is a heavy-dosage beta blocker. You've been drugging my six-year-old daughter! Why?!
MARA (O.S.) (From the hallway) Because of the dental records.
Nathaniel turns. Mara stands at the threshold, holding Eleanor’s hand.
MARA (CONT'D) Caroline’s body was burned beyond recognition in that boat crash. The dental records were sent from Aunt Vivian’s private clinic.
Nathaniel stares at Vivian, the horrific truth taking shape in his mind.
NATHANIEL (Whispering) The woman we buried... wasn't Caroline.
Vivian backs toward the hallway, her hands trembling as she reaches into her coat pocket—pulling out a sleek silver cell phone.
VIVIAN (Panicked, cold) She wanted out, Nathaniel! She hated you! She hated this life! We staged the accident. She’s living in Portugal with three million dollars of your estate!
NATHANIEL And my daughters?
VIVIAN Sophie saw her! Three weeks ago, Caroline came back to the estate to get the rest of her bearer bonds from this room! Sophie saw her face in the dark! I had to keep the child quiet until I could clear the rest of the funds!
Nathaniel moves faster than Vivian can react.
He grabs her wrist, twisting it until the phone drops and shatters on the floor. He pins her against the doorframe, his blue-gray eyes burning with pure venom.
NATHANIEL You poisoned my daughter to cover up your sister's escape.
VIVIAN (Gasping) Nathaniel... please... she's my sister...
NATHANIEL And they are my daughters.
Nathaniel looks past Vivian toward the foyer below.
NATHANIEL (CONT'D) (Calling down) Marcus! Lock the main gates! Call the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Tell them we have an international kidnapping and fraud ring inside the house.
MARCUS (O.S.) (From downstairs) Already on it, Mr. Calloway!
Nathaniel shoves Vivian hard onto the floor of the corridor. She collapses into a heap, her tailored suit disheveled, her mask completely gone.
Nathaniel steps out of the room, turning his back on her entirely.
He kneels down in front of Eleanor and Sophie. Mara steps aside, watching quietly.
Nathaniel reaches out, pulling both of his daughters tightly into his chest. Sophie buries her face into his shoulder, while Eleanor finally lets her tears fall, wrapping her arms around her father's neck.
NATHANIEL (CONT'D) (Choked up) I'm sorry. I'm so sorry I didn't listen to you.
ELEANOR (Whispering) You're home now, Daddy.
Nathaniel looks up from his daughters to Mara. A silent, profound moment of understanding passes between them.
NATHANIEL (To Mara, sincerely) Thank you for standing in front of them.
MARA (Softly) Always, Mr. Calloway.
Outside, police sirens begin to wail in the distance, cutting through the rainy night, as the shadows that haunted the Calloway mansion finally crumble away.
