The forest was blanketed in a heavy, eerie silence, broken only by the rhythmic crunch of dirt and pine needles beneath my heavy boots. Dusk was settling quickly, casting long, twisted shadows through the ancient trees. A biting cold wind swept through the glade, carrying with it an unsettling, metallic scent that made the hair on the back of my neck stand on end.
I held the metallic sensor firmly in my right hand, its cold surface pressing into my leather glove. The tiny digital display flickered with a faint, pale blue light, but the indicator needle remained unnaturally still—dead center, hovering on zero. It was as if the device was refusing to acknowledge the strange atmosphere surrounding me.
Taking a slow, deliberate step forward, I raised the antenna toward the hollow trunk of a massive, decaying oak tree. For a second, nothing happened. The forest seemed to hold its breath.
Then, the device vibrated violently.
A sharp, high-pitched whine burst from the tiny speaker, piercing the quiet evening. The needle on the gauge slammed wildly to the red zone on the far right, pulsing in sync with a rapid, panicking beep. The screen flashed frantically, reading values that shouldn’t have been possible.
My heart hammered against my ribs. Whatever was out there—whatever was hiding just beyond the tree line—was no longer passive. It was active, it was close, and it had just noticed me.
I took a hasty step backward, my thumb frantically reaching for the reset switch on the side of the device. But before I could press it, the signal peaked. The high-pitched beep merged into a solid, continuous screech, and the display abruptly went pitch black.
Silence returned to the woods, heavier and colder than before. I lowered the dead sensor, looking up into the shadows between the trees, knowing with absolute certainty that I was no longer alone.
