The Last Ray of Dawn

The ancient stone tower stood atop the jagged cliffs of Oakhaven, its crumbling walls wrapped in centuries of silent moss. Down below, the dark ocean crashed against the rocks, casting a fine mist into the freezing night air. High up on the highest balcony, Arthur adjusted his thick woolen cloak against the biting wind. In his hands, he held a heavily weathered brass spyglassโ€”its surface scratched from countless journeys across the continent.

He lifted the brass cylinder to his eye, pointing it straight toward the empty, pitch-black horizon. For hours, there had been nothing but the suffocating darkness and the hollow howling of the wind. The kingdom had been shrouded in an eternal twilight ever since the Shadow Veil fell three decades ago, leaving the land cold, barren, and trapped in endless night. Scholars said the sun was gone forever. Arthur refused to believe them.

He adjusted the focus ring on the brass lens, his fingers tremblingโ€”partly from the bitter chill, but mostly from a growing sense of desperation.

Then, right at the edge of the world, something shifted.

Through the clear lens, a microscopic speck of brilliant gold pierced through the dense, ink-black clouds. Arthur held his breath, unable to blink. The faint pinpoint burst into a soft, glowing ember, slowly spreading across the rim of the ocean. It was warmth. Real, radiant light.

A breath he didn't realize he was holding escaped his lips, turning into a cloud of steam in the cold air. The shadows on the balcony began to retreat, revealing the intricate carved runes on the tower floor that had lain dormant for a generation. As the golden light spilled over the crest of the waves, the dark sea reflected a blinding, glorious amber.

Arthur lowered the brass spyglass, a faint smile breaking across his face. He looked out over the vast horizon as the morning sun finally broke free from its decades-long prison, bathing the ancient land in warmth once more.

The long night was officially over.
