The Price of Arrogance
The silence in the grand dining room was absolute, so heavy that even the faint clinking of silverware from adjacent tables vanished into thin air.
Just seconds prior, Arthur Pendelton—a high-flying venture capitalist accustomed to treating everyone beneath his salary tier like background noise—had made a spectacle of throwing a glass of ice water directly into the face of a young waiter. "You're fired!" Arthur had roared, laughing maniacally as water dripped from the young man’s crisp white shirt and black vest. He thought it was a brilliant display of dominance in front of his wealthy colleagues.
He didn't notice the young waiter’s expression shift. There was no terror, no shame, and no tears.
The waiter slowly reached into his inner jacket pocket, pulled out a phone, and turned the glowing screen directly toward Arthur. On it was a live phone call interface displaying a single word: OWNER.
"What is wrong with you?" Arthur hissed, taking a half-step back, though his voice lacked its previous venom. "What are you doing with that phone?"
"I am the owner," the young man said quietly, his voice echoing across the silent dining room with steady, undeniable authority.
Arthur froze. His smug smile withered instantly, replaced by a pale, hollow shock. "You... you're a waiter here. You work for me—I mean, you work for the restaurant!"
The young man—whose name tag actually read Kenneth, though few patrons ever bothered to read it—calmly wiped a droplet of water from his cheek. "My family owns the hospitalities group that acquired this venue last month. Every quarter, I work undercover at one of our flagship establishments to observe how our staff is treated, and more importantly, how our patrons treat them."
He tapped a button on the phone screen and put it to his ear. "Security? Please step into the main dining hall. We have a guest who needs to be escorted out immediately."
The surrounding diners began whispering, their eyes fixed on Arthur, who had turned a bright, furious red. The colleagues sitting at Arthur's table lowered their heads, quietly pushing back their chairs to distance themselves from the impending fallout.
"Listen, Kenneth—or whatever your name is," Arthur stammered, his hands fidgeting nervously as he tried to laugh it off. "It was just a misunderstanding! I had a stressful day, and the water... well, it was a joke. A lighthearted joke!"
"Throwing water in someone's face is not a joke, Mr. Pendelton," Kenneth replied, maintaining complete composure. "It's assault. And respect is non-negotiable in my establishments."
Two towering security officers appeared beside Arthur’s table. Before Arthur could utter another word, Kenneth motioned toward the exit.
"Your reservation is canceled, your corporate account with our hospitality group is permanently terminated, and you are banned from all our locations nationwide," Kenneth announced smoothly.
As Arthur was escorted out under the scrutinizing gazes of every patron in the room, Kenneth turned to the surrounding tables, adjusted his damp tie, and offered a polite bow.
"My apologies for the interruption, ladies and gentlemen. Please, enjoy your evening."
