Shadows on the Rain-Slicked Road

The world shattered in an instant. The deafening sound of crumpling metal and shattering glass echoed through the dark, rain-soaked night, cutting through the heavy silence of the isolated highway.

Inside the cabin, time seemed to freeze. Smoke began to curl from beneath the crushed hood, carrying the sharp, acrid smell of burnt rubber and leaking fluids. Rain poured down relentlessly through the fractured windshield, drumming a cold, rhythmic beat against the dashboard. For a long, terrifying moment, neither of them moved.

Ethan coughed, the air knocked out of his lungs. His vision blurred, framing the faint crimson glow of the hazard lights blinking uselessly on the console. Pain shot through his shoulder, but panic quickly numbnessed the ache as he turned to his right.

"Sarah?" His voice was a raspy whisper. "Sarah, can you hear me?"

Sarah stirred slowly, a low groan escaping her lips. Her forehead rested against the deflated airbag, a thin line of blood trickling down her temple. As she opened her eyes, the fog of shock cleared just enough for terror to take its place. She looked at Ethan, her eyes wide with unexpressed questions, before turning her head to look out into the pitch-black woods surrounding the wreck.

"What... what hit us?" she gasped, her breathing shallow and ragged. "It came out of nowhere, Ethan."

"I don't know," Ethan said, unbuckling his seatbelt with trembling hands. "Don't move too fast. Just stay calm."

He pushed his door open, the twisted frame resisting before giving way with a metallic screech. Stepping out into the pouring rain, the icy water instantly soaked through his jacket. He turned back, helping Sarah navigate through her damaged door, supporting her weight as her boots hit the muddy asphalt.

They stood together under the dark canopy of trees, backlit only by the flickering headlights of their ruined car. But as Ethan looked down the empty stretch of road, his heart sank.

There was no other vehicle. No animal tracks in the mud. No debris from another car. Nothing.

It was as if an invisible wall—or an unseen force—had struck them out of the dark.

"Where is it?" Sarah whispered, shivering uncontrollably as she clutched Ethan's arm. "Ethan, where did it go?"

Before he could answer, the car’s headlights flickered twice and died completely, plunging them into absolute darkness. The only sound left was the endless falling rain and the heavy, ragged breathing of two survivors stranded on a road that suddenly felt vast, hostile, and unknown.

Then, deep within the dark forest beside them, a single branch snapped.

Ethan drew Sarah closer, looking into the shadowy treeline. They knew the crash was just the beginning of their nightmare—and whatever had crossed their path on that deserted road was now waiting for them in the dark.
