VICTORIA stands frozen near the front door, her face drained of color as the heavy silence hangs over the room.
ARTHUR turns slowly from MAYA and her younger brother toward Victoria. His voice is dangerously quiet.
ARTHUR Give me the key.
VICTORIA Arthur, please... they're lying. They don't know what they're talking about!
ARTHUR (stepping closer) The key, Victoria. Now.
Victoria's hands tremble as she digs into her coat pocket, pulling out a small brass key. Arthur snatches it from her hand.
VICTORIA (desperate, whispering) If you open that drawer... you ruin us. You ruin everything we've built.
ARTHUR You ruined it the moment you laid your hands on them.
Arthur doesn't wait. He turns and strides up the stairs. Victoria sags against the doorframe, a broken sob escaping her lips. Maya grips her brother's hand tight, watching as Arthur disappears into the upper hallway.
INT. SECOND FLOOR - MASTER BEDROOM - CONTINUOUS
Arthur walks to the heavy mahogany desk in the corner. He inserts the brass key into the top drawer lock and turns it.
CLICK.
He pulls the drawer open. Beneath a pile of old documents lies a thick Manila envelope. Arthur pulls it out and opens the clasp.
He slides out a stack of medical records and a single, faded 4x6 photograph.
Arthur’s breath hitches.
The photograph shows a hospital room six years ago. A younger Victoria sits on a bed, holding two newborn twins in her arms—a baby girl with Maya’s distinct birthmark on her shoulder, and a baby boy.
Beside the photo is a signed relinquishment document and a forged adoption record stamped with Victoria’s maiden family seal.
ARTHUR (V.O.) She didn't just know them... she abandoned them.
Arthur's hands shake as the horror settles in. The children weren't strangers. They were Victoria’s biological twins from a secret pregnancy before they met—abandoned and hidden away so her powerful family wouldn't face scandal.
INT. LIVING ROOM - CONTINUOUS
Arthur walks down the stairs, the photograph and documents clutched firmly in his hand.
Victoria looks up, her eyes wide with terror as she sees the papers.
VICTORIA (crying, panicked) I was young, Arthur! My father... he forced me to give them up! If the media found out, it would have destroyed my family's legacy! I couldn't let them ruin my life twice!
ARTHUR (cold, unyielding) They didn't ruin your life, Victoria. You discarded them. And when fate brought them into my care, you tried to erase them again.
VICTORIA Arthur, we can fix this! We can send them away—to a board school, overseas, anywhere! Just don't do this to me!
Arthur walks past her and opens the front door wide, letting the icy night wind blow into the foyer.
ARTHUR The police and my attorneys will have copies of these records by morning. Your family's power ends tonight.
VICTORIA (screaming) You can't do this to me! I'm your wife!
ARTHUR Not anymore. Get out.
Victoria stares at him, realizing there is no mercy left in his eyes. Shaking with humiliation and fear, she stumbles out into the freezing night. Arthur slams the door shut, locking it with a heavy deadbolt.
He turns around. Maya and her brother are standing by the couch, watching him uncertainly.
Arthur drops to one knee in front of them, setting the photograph aside, and gently takes both of their small hands into his.
ARTHUR (CONT'D) (softly, tears in his eyes) Nobody is ever going to hurt you again. You are safe. You are home.
Maya looks at her little brother, then back at Arthur. A small, tearful smile breaks across her face as she leans in and hugs him tightly. Arthur wraps his arms around both children as the quiet warmth of the house settles over them.
